Hermit crabs mating?
In the last two weeks my Calcinus elegans hermit crabs often were together. The bigger one - I suppose it´s the male - tried to get with its claws into the shell of the other. But the other didn´t mind. At least it was my impression, that there were no enmity or hostile behaviour between them. The last three days they stayed at the same spot, a narrow passage between two rocks. Today I could observe something like mating. They were embracing in a human manner. Because I ´m tactful I didn´t disturb, but I took some pics.
Because I had to photograph aslope through the front pane, the photos have some blur. One can see that one - the female? - has come out nearly with complete hard part of the body (cephalothorax) out of her? shell. I took the six pics within 10 minutes. Half an hour later mating was finished. The femal stayed on the same place, but thew male was already climbing on the rocks.
I have no hope to get young hermit crabs, because they start their lifes as planctonic larvae and the filter and the lack of food will give them no chance.
